Planting Bulbs at Crantit Burn

Before the October Holidays, as part of our Plants topic, P7 visited Crantit Burn. We had previously written to Mr Dennis Bichan to ask permission to plant daffodil bulbs at the edge of his burn. We worked very hard indeed and in one and a half hours we planted hundreds of bulbs. Although there may not be very many next spring, we hope they will multiply and become a beautiful show in future years. Many of us spoke of showing the flowers to our own children and even our grandchildren.

Golden Time Baking

Today we baked some good food.  We made the Muesli tray bake and were careful not to overcook the chocolate.  We agreed it was a recipe we'd like to make again.  Ryan thought he'd add a little less syrup next time.

Muesli Squares traybake

It's been a busy day in the kitchen for P7.  6 people chose baking as their Golden Time activity, and used this recipe.  Give it a go - it's one of Mrs Thomson's favourites!

150g Muesli
120g Coco pops
10 marshmallows
100g white chocolate
1 teaspoon butter
1 tablespoon syrup

Melt the chocolate, marshmallows, butter and syrup in a saucepan.
 Take off the heat.
Add Muesli and coco pops.
Spread mixture in a tin and put in the fridge.
Cut into squares.

Enjoy! and comment :)

An act of kindness, and a lot of learning

Kaitlin baked these biscuits and iced them.  She made sure there were enough for everyone in P7 to share with her.  The ingredients for the biscuits came from 5 different plants.  Can you guess what they are?

Molten Mug Chocolate cake at Golden Time

You can find the recipe we used here.
Do you have any recipe suggestions for us?
We don't have a long time together in the kitchen, usually 40 minutes at the most.

Aerodynamic Testing

Our teams built paper aeroplanes and flew them in the Dinner hall. Well done to everyone, we all stood up and took turns.  Some people found it exciting, some people found it scary.  We are working together to help each other feel confident trying new things.
Talking about the folds

Making accurate folds

Shaping the nose carefully
Doing each stage together

Amy and Ryan had the best team score.  An average of 8.45m per flight. Have you beat that?  Let us know.

Tag Rugby Festival 13th September 2013

P5, 6 and 7 played well and included everyone.  We had fun too!

Flight Workshop with Bill Graham on Friday 6th September

Bill Graham is an engineer.  He visited us as part of the International Science Festival.  He told us about flight.  He explained about how people invented flying machines which travel in our atmosphere, like aeroplanes.  He explained about machines which travel in space, and how they get outside the Earth's atmosphere.  They are called Spacecraft.
Bill showed us the Mars Rover he built.
Bradley and Joshua are remotely controlling the Rover.  They are watching the pictures it sends back to the screen by radio signal.  It would take 30 minutes for the signals to travel back to Earth from Mars.
Mars Rover exploring in the school corridors, sending pictures back to our class.

Information sheet, Green Swans

Do you…

want to use the World and its resources thoughtfully,
so that we don’t make it harder for people to live well in the future.

believe that we can make good changes for lots more people.

want to find ways to use the World’s resources carefully.

want to make small changes to the way you use The World.

want to encourage others to change how they use The World.

If you answered “YES” to any of these, you would make a good Green Swan.

Green Swan Activity 26th August

Learning intention:
To understand the role of the Green Swans.
Green Swan Team members will be chosen this week.
Read the information sheet on the next post which explains more about Green Swans.

Do one of the tasks below:
  • Apply for the job as a Green Swan by writing a paragraph which explains why you would be a good P7 Green Swan.  Success criteria: You have written 6 sentences or more.  You include an example of something you do to reduce waste.

  • Draw a mind-map which shows all the ways Glaitness School looks after the World’s resources by Re-using, Reducing or Re-cycling.  Success criteria: You include information about how we reduce, re-use or recycle these things: electricity, water, paper, pens/pencils/paints, litter, unwanted clothes.
